IDEA, FAPE, LRE are the Alphabet Soup: Understanding the IEP (5 credits)

IEPs. FAPE. LRE. Assessments. Related services. If you work in or want to work in public schools, understanding the special education system can sometimes feel like learning another language.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) establishes important rights and protections for students with disabilities and provides the framework within which special education services are delivered. For music therapists, understanding that framework is essential to communicating with school teams and navigating how music therapy services may be considered and provided.

In this practical course, you’ll break down commonly used special education terminology and acronyms, explore different ways music therapy can be delivered within the school setting, and learn more about the process involved in requesting and obtaining approval for a music therapy assessment.

Rather than feeling lost in special education terminology and procedures, you’ll develop a clearer understanding of where music therapy fits, how the process works, and how to communicate more effectively within the educational system.

Whether you’re already providing school-based music therapy or are interested in expanding your work into public schools, this course will help you approach the special education process with greater knowledge and confidence.

In this workshop, you will learn:

The foundations of IDEA and how the law shapes special education services for students with disabilities.
Common special education terminology and acronyms you’ll encounter when working with schools and IEP teams.
