IDEA, FAPE, LRE are the Alphabet Soup: Understanding the IEP (5 credits)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides protection for children with special needs to ensure that they are receiving an appropriate education. Music therapy services are a component of this federal law. During this course we will discuss common acronyms used within special education, how music therapy can be delivered, and the route to getting an assessment approved in the public school system.

Course Objectives:

After completing this course, you will be able to:

1.Explain the implications of IDEA on students receiving special education services (IV.A.1) (V.A.5) (V.B.13)

2.Identify where Music Therapy can be listed on the Individualized Education Plan (V.B.4,6,8)

3.Identify the steps of the SEMTAP to determine eligibility for services (II.B.1,5,9) (II.C,3)

4.Define IEP, IEE, and LRE and implications on music therapy assessments/ services. (II.D.6.a-e) (II.D.5,12)
