MUSIC THERAPY ETHICS AND STANDARDS: A BREAKDOWN (3 credits)

Presented by Katherine Borst MT-BC

Ethical practice isn’t always about knowing what’s clearly right or wrong. The difficult situations are often the ones where there isn’t an obvious answer.

What do you do when professional responsibilities compete? When boundaries become unclear? When the needs of a client, organization, colleague, or music therapist seem to conflict?

Ethics Breakdown takes you beyond simply reviewing ethical standards and helps you think through how those standards apply when real-world situations become complicated.

In this self-study course, you’ll explore music therapy ethics, standards of practice, ethical dilemmas, and approaches to decision-making. You’ll also hear recorded discussions and real-world examples from other music therapists, giving you opportunities to consider different perspectives and how ethical principles can be interpreted and applied in practice.

You’ll then bring the learning together by working through an experienced or hypothetical ethical situation of your own, helping you move from knowing the standards to actually using them to guide your decisions.

Along the way, you’ll complete your CBMT ethics credit requirement while strengthening the ethical reasoning skills you can bring back to your everyday music therapy practice.

In this workshop, you will learn:

Key ethical principles and standards relevant to music therapy practice.
How to identify ethical concerns within complex clinical and professional situations.
Approaches for thinking through ethical dilemmas when the appropriate course of action isn’t immediately clear.
How other music therapists approach and discuss real-world ethical challenges.
Ways to consider multiple perspectives when making ethical decisions.
How to apply ethical principles and standards to an experienced or hypothetical situation.
How to strengthen your confidence in making thoughtful, professionally responsible decisions in your music therapy work.

Earn the ethics credits you need while developing skills you can use when the answer isn’t simply black and white.
