In this CMTE on autism/ADHD/neurodiversity and DBT, participants will view conversations by DBT therapists Charlie Swenson MD, Amara Brooke PhD and Rachel Kraus LCSW-C, that focus on the application and adaptation of DBT skills in work with neurodiverse individuals.  Two of these therapists are autistic and have subspecialties in working with autistic clients.

In order to take the concepts presented and apply them with your music therapy clients, participants in this CMTE will be guided in group discussions by DBT informed Board-Certified Music Therapist Stephen King MT-BC.

These podcasts are available for free at Charlie Swenson’s website, and to honor the professionals who recorded them, we are only charging a minimal fee to you for the CMTE credits and the facilitating music therapist facilitating  discussions relating it to music therapy.

Learn to:

• Identify DBT skills that seamlessly align with neurodiverse clients.

• Learn the art of adaptation for DBT skills to enhance effectiveness.

• Navigate potential pitfalls by understanding the impact of autistic features.

• Explore unintentional invalidation and refine your therapeutic approach.

Join us for this special conversation, which will eventually lead to ten tips for adapting DBT therapy with autistic people, and then on to what is meant by the Universal Design for Learning. Get lots of new resources as well as food for thought when working with neurodiverse clients.

Schedule:

This self-study version of the class consists of recordings totaling 8 hours of content.  At the end you will be asked to submit your takeaways and how you will use it in your music therapy practice.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to

1. Identify at least one DBT skill that works well as it is with neurodiverse clients.

2.  Name one DBT skill that would require adaptation in order to work well with this population

3. Identify one skill that can actually make things worse if you aren’t mindful of autistic features

4. Describe how neurodiverse clients might feel invalidated by you unintentionally.
