These songs can be used to reinforce DBT skills.

What this CD can be used for

This CD is a companion to the book:  Music Activities & More for Teaching DBT Skills and Enhancing Any Therapy: Even for the Non-Musician.

The 5 songs on this CD:

  • Roller Coaster Ride- about anger and emotional urges.  Skills taught are to observe whats going on within and describe it to yourself, which separates you from the urge enough to make a wise choice.

  • The Message- about a girl who has urges to self harm and who learns the skill of positive self talk/cheerleading.  The messages are positive parenting messages/affirmations.

  • The System- validates the experience of those who feel trapped in the system and offers hope.

  • I’m Gonna Make It- Uplifting, metaphorical story about following your heart.  Leads to discussing goals and dreams.

  • Pros & Cons- rhythmic patterns of words with the reminder to stop and think about the consequences when you feel urges to act impulsively.

Deborah Spiegel MT-BC

Board Certified Music Therapist and DBT Skills Group Leader

My name is Deborah, I am compelled by a vision to provide opportunities for music therapists and allied health professionals to use music and music activities to reinforce DBT skills.

I also have a passion for supporting adolescents who have been through a lot in finding the light at the end of the tunnel.

The songs on this CD were written to support  my clients  by identifying things they were struggling with  in their lives, such as anger, self-harming behaviors, being in the system, not having parents, etc. My purpose was to start out by validating their experience,  and then leading into a skillful way to handle the situation.
